Organized by the Department of English and Modern Languages at North South University on December 14–15, 2012, the conference brought together scholars, researchers, teachers, writers, and students to explore Shakespeare’s enduring impact on literature, language, culture, theatre, and interdisciplinary studies. Through keynote addresses, research presentations, panel discussions, and scholarly exchanges, the event provided a platform for critical engagement with Shakespearean works and their relevance in contemporary local and global contexts.

Dr. Serajul Islam Choudhury is Professor Emeritus in the Department of English at the University of Dhaka and one of Bangladesh’s leading literary critics, intellectuals, and educationists. He joined the Department of English at the University of Dhaka in 1957 and, over the course of more than four decades, taught literature, supervised research, headed the department, and served as Dean.
He completed his MA in English at the University of Dhaka and later earned a postgraduate diploma in English Studies from the University of Leeds, followed by a doctorate in English from the University of Leicester, United Kingdom. He played a pioneering role in introducing doctoral research in English at the University of Dhaka and was involved in establishing several academic and research initiatives, including the Centre for Advanced Research in Humanities.
In addition to his academic work, Dr. Choudhury has edited major literary and academic journals in both Bangla and English and authored numerous books and essays on literature, culture, politics, and society. His works in English include The Moral Imagination of Joseph Conrad, The Enemy Territory: A Study of Evil in D. H. Lawrence, and Middle Class and the Social Revolution in Bengal: An Incomplete Agenda. He has received several major honors, including the Bangla Academy Literary Award and the Ekushey Padak.
